Though our 95 Blazer had not earned a name for good gas mileage, we reassured
ourselves by telling us that with five passengers we get great miles per
passenger. Patrick volunteered to be the keeper of the mileage log so
we could track the distances, miles per gallon and the like.
After low gas prices for most of the country ($1.29 per gallon or less in Ohio and Indiana, $1.49 in
Wisconsin. In Wyoming we paid $1.49 for premium), we hit California and saw
prices rise to $1.89 in San Francisco and $2.35 near Big Sur. They were low
again across the southeast and the mid-south (under $1.20 in Texas and
Oklahoma), even into Virginia (running in
the $1.25-$1.35 range), but back in the mid-Atlantic and home in New York, they climbed over
$1.50 per gallon again.
All told, we traveled 9,775 miles in 48 days (204 miles per day average).
The car did well on the road, our only trouble coming in Idaho Falls when we
had to replace the gas pump. Of course, after we got home we needed to
replace two computers, brake lines, the master cylinder and a few other
things that ran to $1,750, but the car has 182,000 miles on it and
we'll keep it running to over 300,000. |
