Huntington Edged Out by
Baldwin 5-4
In perhaps their best played game of the season,
the Huntington Sixth Graders mounted a furious and valiant come back against
Baldwin, falling just short as time ran out. Baldwin scored two quick goals
and looked to carry a three to nil advantage into the half before Huntington
fought back with two late first half goals by Chris Mahoney and Pat Wright
(who had three goals on the day). Bolstered by the closing half offense, the
teams went toe to toe in the second half of a hard fought, but cleanly
played game (only one penalty called all day). Baldwin scored, but
Huntington quickly scored again to keep the lead to one goal, before Baldwin
grabbed a late fourth quarter two goal lead. But Huntington fought back
again, scoring one goal with two minutes left, then winning the last face off
to press for another score. As time ran out, Huntington put several shots on
the cage only to see the Baldwin goalie deny them a
score. In the end, the Huntington team gave their all, but came out one slim
goal short. The 6th graders now sport a 2-2 record.
On defense, Liam Jones, Steven Nigro and Chris Potter added grit and quickness,
and Patrick
Cronin's added size and aggression to the
Huntington defense as he took down several players in the crease. Derek Northcoate came back with a strong showing in goal against a tough Baldwin
team. On the offensive end, the quartet of Luke Nawrocki, Pat Coffey, Chris
Mahoney and Ryan McDonough kept the pressure on their opponents all game and
attack men Zack Moss, Kevin Marek, Pat Wright, Ryan Brady and John McCallen anchored a
fast break that nearly bowled over Baldwin. (To see the full picture, double click on the thumbnails below.)
