In their
best and closest game of the season, the Huntington 4th Graders beat a fierce
Farmingdale A team 5-4 in a game that came down to the final seconds. A heavy
fog hung over the field on Mother's Day morning as the two teams took the field.
Huntington received a quick wake up call as Farmingdale scored twice on two long
shots to take a 2 - 0 lead. The coaches kept the boys focused. The defense
toughed up behind Louie Puca and Jamie Cronin while the offense began pressing
the attack. Jack Wallace scored first for the home team on a bounce shot that
eluded the Farmingdale goalie's stick, then Teddy Blyskal evened the score. Jack
O'Neil, Peter Kingston, Duncan Murchison and Nick Saputo all contributed to the
first half offensive resurgence.
As the second half began, Huntington grabbed the lead for the first time behind
Jack Wallace's second goal of the game. Willie Coffey added to the pressure with
several long runs and dazzling spin moves. However, Farmingdale came back with
two goals to take a one game lead leaving less than five minutes in the game.
Huntington would not be thwarted. Goalie Bobby O'Brien, pound for pound the
toughest youth goalie on Long Island, shut down every Farmingdale scoring
opportunity, while defenders John O'Connor, Bryan Griffith, Puca and Cronin
out-hustled and out-muscled the Daler's attack men. Midfielders Coffey and
O'Neil proved unrelenting. Duncan Murchison, Kingston and McGrath pressed all
the more. The hard work paid off with a daring score by Nick Smith and with less
than three minutes to go, Adam Pomper rocketed the game winner into the net.
Time ran out as Farmingdale had a two one one fast break, but John O'Connor and
Bobby O'Brien stalled the attackers just long enough for time to expire.
